Niya Bates is a native of central Virginia, with over 5 generations of family from the area. She became interested in the industry after hearing stories about her grandfather running moonshine and making dandelion, peach, blackberry, and grape wine in Keswick. In 2016, she co-founded VinGo Tours with Kristen Gardner-Beal, to encourage more diversity in Central VA’s agritourism sector. Although the pandemic changed their plans, Niya has remained a champion of the histories of African American growers and producers of wine, cider, and spirits - particularly free and enslaved people from Central Virginia. Niya previously served as the director of African American history at Monticello, and is currently pursuing a PhD in History and African American Studies at Princeton University.
Niya selected Blenheim Vineyards 2021 Rkatsiteli, 2021 Roussanne, and 2021 Painted Red as her Oenoverse Club trio.

The Fine Print: Looking for a sip without the commitment? These wine packs are available for everyone at full price, both online and at the vineyard. Shipping across the US is an option (extra charges apply), or you can pick up your pack at the winery from the first of each month.
